Meridian, a New Zealand renewable electricity company, is in the middle of building the world’s most southern wind farm. The goal is to reduce diesel power in the region. It is located on Crater Hill, Ross Island, Antarctica. They are still on phase 1 of the project. Three turbines on Crater Hill are installed and are generating renewable energy to power New Zealand’s Scott Base and its neighbor, the American base, at McMurdo Station in the 2009/2010 summer season. In accordance with the commissioning plan, the wind farm output has been limited to 560kW as part of the planned monitoring period until mid-January 2010.
